Koijam's plea to EC
By Our Legal Correspondent

NEW DELHI, JAN. 16. The former Chief Minister of Manipur, Radhabhinod Koijam, has urged the Election Commission to take strong measures to ensure a free and fair election.

In a memorandum submitted to the Chief Election Commissioner, J.M. Lyngdoh, he said the security scenario in the State was not bright as many political parties had been trying to take advantage of the delicate situation that emerged after the announcement of extension of ceasefire between the NSCN (I-M) and the Centre without territorial limits in June last.

Mr. Koijam said these parties had engaged in a disinformation campaign against the State's senior politicians. Some politicians were also instigating women and youth against the elected representatives of the 7th Assembly, holding them responsible for putting the State under President's rule and for the extension of NSCN (I-M) ceasefire to Manipur.

Giving instances of attack by miscreants near his house, Mr. Koijam said strong measures were required to instil confidence among the people so that they could exercise their franchise freely.
