CISF men go on rampage

RANCHI, JAN. 16. Twelve people, including five women and a two-month-old baby, were injured and property worth lakhs of rupees was damaged when the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) jawans allegedly went on a rampage at the tribal-dominated Lewatand village in Bokaro district on Tuesday night, the Bokaro Deputy Commissioner, Vimal Kirti Singh, said today.

The incident was sparked off by the alleged sacrilege of a Sarna Sthal (place of worship by tribals) by a local `khatal' owner with the tacit support of the CISF men, Mr. Singh said.

Angered by this act, the tribals of the village beat up one of the CISF men, he said.

About half-an-hour later around 80-odd lathi-wielding CISF constables stormed into the village beating up everyone who came their way including women and children and destroying about 12 TV sets and an equal number of scooters and autorickshaws.

A magisterial inquiry had been ordered into the incident, Mr. Singh said, adding no arrests had so far been made in this connection.
