Handing over terrorists not enough: Fernandes

NEW DELHI, JAN .18. The Defence Minister, George Fernandes, today said India would not withdraw its troops from the border even if Pakistan handed over the 20 terrorists demanded by New Delhi, asserting that only an end to Pakistan-sponsored cross-border terrorism could lead to a de-escalation of tensions.

``No purpose will be solved even if Pakistan hands over the 20 terrorists but continued with its cross-border terrorism,'' Mr. Fernandes said in an interview to CNN. He was commenting on the Parliamentary Affairs Minister, Pramod Mahajan's statement that India would reduce its troops from the border if Pakistan handed over the 20 terrorists to New Delhi. Asked why India cannot reduce its troops on the border, he said because Pakistani troops were there.
