Opinion - Letters to the Editor

Intolerant tendency

Sir, — The Shiv Sena's threat on Valentine's Day celebrations in Mumbai and Delhi is an assault on civil liberties. The day is commemorative of St. Valentine, the third century priest who performed marriages for soldiers in Rome. Today, it is celebrated all over the world, when people express their love for parents, children, teachers, spouses, and sweet hearts. There is no reason why this should be seen as a threat to Indian culture. The Sena, by adopting medieval attitudes, is branding itself as the Indian Taliban. What will it do next? Ban greeting cards? Pull the plug on music? If this intolerant tendency is not nipped in the bud, it will lead to the hegemony of small-mindedness in governance.

Vincent Morris,
Bangalore
