Dalits denied access to pond
VIZIANAGARAM: The upper caste Hindus of Khasapeta in L.Kota mandal once again blocked the way of Dalits to the water pond in the village with haystacks and thorn bushes. On September 29 last year, when landlords imposed social boycott and damaged the drainage system in the Dalitwada, the revenue officials, the upper caste Hindus and the aggrieved Dalits came to an understanding in the presence of the Uttarapalli MLA, Kolla Appala Naidu, that the Dalits would be allowed to draw water from the pond till the administration laid a separate road alongside the school compound wall for Dalits. But, on January 18, farmers belonging to the upper castes, Kottana Appanna, Kolla Krishna, Jaagarapu Ramakoti, Kottana Satyam, Kottana Appala Naidu and Jaagarapu Srirama Murty, in spite of a warning by the District Revenue Officer, P.A. Krishna Rao, that action would be taken against them under SC/ST Atrocities (Prevention) Act, blocked the road with haystacks and thorn bushes.
In a memorandum submitted to the district Collector here on Monday, P. Suri Demudu, along with other Dalits, alleged that streetlighting cut off to the Dalitwada on September 29 had not been restored so far and also the caste Hindus had stopped employing them in drainage work sanctioned for Eetapeta. He appealed to the Collector to take action under the Act against the upper caste Hindus and restore way to the village pond.
