India crushes Canada

AUCKLAND, JAN. 21. India scored a big 242-run victory over Canada in their Group A match in the under-19 World Cup cricket tournament here on Monday. Electing to bat, India scored a massive 356 for five in its allotted 50 overs, thanks to Maninder Bisla's 128 and half-centuries from Parthiv Patel (74) and Paul Valthathy (50). It then skittled out Canada for 114 with Abhishek Sharma and Siddharth Trivedi scalping three wickets each. Meanwhile at Christchurch, Nepal came within range of a major upset in its opening match against England. England was expected to romp to a routine victory but Nepal refused to fold, losing by just 37 runs.

At Auckland: India 356 for five in 50 overs (Maninder Bisla 128, Parthiv Patel 74, Paul Valthathy 50, Mohnish Mishra 35, Y Gnaneswara Rao 27; Nathan Richards three for 70) bt Canada 114 in 40.2 overs (Umar Bhatti 39, Ashish Bagai 33; Abhishek Sharma three for 13, Siddharth Trivedi three for 28) in Group A.

At Christchurch: Zimbabwe 71 in 36.2 overs (Michael Bates four for 26) lost to New Zealand 72 for four in 10.3 overs (Jesse Ryder 41) in Group B.

At Christchurch: England 204 for six in 50 overs (Gordon Muchall 57, Balal Shafayat 45 not out, Nicky Peng 36) bt Nepal 167 in 49.2 overs (Binod Das 28, Sanjam Regmi 35 not out; Paul McMahon five for 25) in Group C.

At Dunedin: West Indies 402 for five in 50 overs (Donovan Pagon 176, Llendl Simmons 121, Alcindo Holder 56 not out) bt Scotland 101 in 38.3 overs (Qasim Sheikh 37; Ryan Nurse three for 18) in Group D.
