Plea for R&D in non-conventional energy
By Our Staff Reporter
PONDICHERRY, JAN. 21. The former Minister of State for Civil Aviation and MP, M. O. H. Farook, has called upon the Centre to ensure that adequate funds were released to promote research and development activities in the field of non-conventional energy resources.
Addressing a five-day regional workshop on `Renewable Energy' here today, he called for a special focus on utilising non-conventional energy for power generation to reduce expenditure.
However, power generation from non-conventional sources should be economical even for the poor. Indigenous technologies should be promoted as this will reduce our reliance on other foreign country for necessary know-how.
Mr. Farook also appealed to the participants, including scientists, from other States to test pilot project on renewable energy in Pondicherry. With high transmission losses, there was an urgent need to harness energy from non conventional sources to meet the requirements of the people.
Releasing a manual brought out by the Integrated Rural Energy Division of the DRDA, the MP, Tirunavukarasu, said wind energy had already been identified as an ideal alternative source of energy in several states. Utilising solar energy for generating electricity was also another viable option. As a first step, the Solar pond in Kalapet should be activated and the requisite machine should be installed.
The DRDA chairperson and project director, Mrs Satbir Silas, spoke on the various power schemes being implemented in Chunnambar using non conventional sources. The workshop was sponsored in collaboration with the Union Ministry for Conventional Energy Sources New Delhi.
Delegates from Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, Kerala, Karnataka, Goa participated. Professors of engineering college, departments of Local Administration and Science and Technology and representatives of various institutions and voluntary organisations took part in the deliberations.
The MLAs, A. Anbalagan and Neela Gangadharan, the project officer of IREP, D.Selvi, also spoke. Later, a demonstration on solar power operated lights was held.
