India, Israel for closer IT ties
By Our Special Correspondent
NEW DELHI, JAN. 22. India and Israel today institutionalised a framework of cooperation and collaboration in cutting-edge technologies in the IT and electronics sector. Many of these have applications in the defence sector too where India is keen on intensifying cooperation.
The MoU was signed in Tel Aviv by the visiting Communication and IT Minister, Pramod Mahajan, and his Israeli counterpart, Reuven Rivlin. Mr. Mahajan also called on the Israeli Defence Minister, Binyamin Ben-Eliezer, who is also the Chairman of the Labour Party.
Significantly, Israel has followed an unusual process in gaining expertise in the IT sector. Highly-trained graduates of the Israel Defence Forces have spearheaded the high-tech boom, turning cutting edge defence technology into civilian applications. India has recently expressed its keenness to capitalise on Israel's prowess in IT-related weaponry systems especially radars.
Mr. Mahajan's visit comes at a time when both countries have undertaken measures to streamline institutional bilateral cooperation. An agreement had been reached in the area of telecom and posts in 1994 which came into effect from 1998. Both countries also signed an ``umbrella agreement'' for cooperation in the field of industrial and technological research and development. It was the first time that both sides felt the need for a separate MoU on electronics.
The scope of the working group formed after the signing of the MoU includes technology transfer for products and services in the electronics and IT sector.
