Chatterjee, new Commerce Secy.

NEW DELHI, JAN. 22. The Government today named the Mines Secretary, Deepak Chatterjee, as the next Commerce Secretary. And the Commerce Ministry Special Secretary, Nripendra Mishra, will be the new Secretary, Fertilisers. Mr. Chatterjee will replace Prabir Sengupta who retires on January 31, while Mr. Mishra will be replaced by S.N. Menon.

Bopa Rai will take over as the Planning Commission Secretary from Ajit Kumar, who also retires on January 31. R. Poornalingam has been appointed Additional Secretary in the Ministry of Power while Kumud Bansal, Additional Secretary in the Department of Secondary and Higher Education, will replace the Secretary, K. S. Sarma, who retires on February 16.

The post of Director-General of Foreign Trade, held by N. L. Lakhanpal, has been upgraded to that of Secretary. So have been the posts of Secretary, National Commission for the SCs and the STs, (in terms of pay and allowances), held by Malti Sinha, the Advisor, Planning Commission (P. K. Mohanty), and the Managing Director, TRIFED (Pratibha Karan).

H. A. Kundra will be the new Mines Secretary and Finance Ministry Additional Secretary, G. C. Srivastava, has been promoted as the Tariff Commissioner, a Secretary-level post. Ashok Pradhan will be the new Small Scale Industries Secretary while Binu Sen will replace him as the Agriculture Secretary. B. N. Jha will take over as the Director-General, Nuclear Power Corporation, and A. Dasgupta will be the new Additional Secretary (Revenue).
