Powell calls up Jaswant
By Sridhar Krishnaswami

WASHINGTON, JAN. 22. The U.S. Secretary of State, Colin Powell, talked to the External Affairs Minister, Jaswant Singh, this morning, and offered his sincere condolences to the families of those killed in the attack on the American Center in Kolkata, the U.S. State Department spokesman, Richard Boucher, said. Gen. Powell thanked New Delhi and the West Bengal Government for the response to the incident. Police support was described as ``outstanding.''

Gen. Powell also spoke to the Pakistan President, Pervez Musharraf. Mr. Boucher did not believe that the conversation was related to the shooting in Kolkata.

The U.S. was working closely with India to ``determine more accurately'' who was responsible for the incident. It was, at this point of time, unable to verify a telephone call supposedly made in India, saying the attack targeted the West Bengal police for its actions along the Indo-Bangladesh border.
