Team goes to Kerala to seize smuggled sandalwood

SALEM, JAN. 22. A team of police and forest personnel from here have gone to Kerala to seize sandalwood smuggled out of Yercaud.
The Deputy Superintendent of Police, Ilangovan, and the District Forest Officer, Ravindran, that sandalwood weighing about 1.5 tonnes and worth about Rs.7 lakhs was clandestinely lifted from a private estate at Yercaud and transported to the sandaloil extracting unit located at Walayar (on the Kerala side). As the unit was not functional for the past few days, the sandal logs were found intact.
Following a complaint from Valliappan and Kannappan, (designated by the Madras High Court as official receivers following a dispute over the property) that a portion of the sandalwood kept in the estate was missing, Duraisamy of Karumalaikudal was secured by the police.
On Duraisamy's confession, seven others-Perumal, Thambian, Parthibhan, Raju, Madhavan, Venkatesan and Sasivannan- were taken into custody. On the direction of the Superintendent of Police, K.Shanmugavel, a special team comprising police and forest personnel have gone to Kerala to take possession of the sandalwood.
