`High Courts could do with lesser holidays'
By Our Legal Correspondent
NEW DELHI, JAN. 22. The Centre has asked the High Courts and the State Governments to re-examine the annual vacations and working days in the High Courts to expedite the disposal of cases. Working days in the district and subordinate courts are regulated by the High Courts.
Following a review of the working days in the Supreme Court and the High Courts by the Estimates Committee of Parliament, it was revealed that all the High Courts worked for 210 days a year. The matter was referred to the Chief Justice of India and he informed the Government that the apex court was already working 220 days and later it was decided to add two more days and the views of the CJI were communicated to all the High Courts.
Most of the Chief Justices of the High Courts were of the view that the existing 210 working days were enough and no change was called for as judges put in extra work in their chambers or at their residence.
But the Government, which had taken several measures for quick disposal of cases, thought it fit to ask the High Courts to re-consider the holidays to expedite the disposal of huge backlog of cases.
