Fire in Leh AIR complex
SRINAGAR, JAN. 22. A devastating fire broke out in the All India Radio complex in Leh damaging recording and administrative sections this afternoon.
Fire services and personnel of security forces and district administration jointly put out the fire after a three- hour battle.
The cause of the fire was not known, an official spokesman said. The extent of damage was being ascertained.
The Leh station of AIR was built in 1971. It was renovated and equipped with latest equipment recently. It was not immediately known whether the programmes from the station were affected.
Officials said the transmission of the station was briefly affected. The routine programmes were relayed through the nearby Chogalansir transmitter as the complex suffered 40 per cent damage.
The fire originated from a `Bukhari', a conventional room heater, in a store room around 12.45 p.m. and engulfed the entire complex within minutes, they said.
The studio, newsroom, control room, administrative section and records were damaged in the fire. Recorded and un- recorded tapes were also burnt in the fire, the officials said. All the employees of the station were safe and no one was hurt in the incident, they said.
