MRI scan in Pondy GH to be dedicated on Jan. 28

PONDICHERRY, JAN. 22. The Department of Health has made arrangements to dedicate the Rs. 5.37 crore most advanced and sophisticated Magnetic Resonance imaging (MRI) Scanner in the general hospital here on January 28.
The Health Minister, E. Valasraj told newspersons at the hospital today, the scanner had been purchased from the Germany-based Siemens company as per the approval of the Administration given in March last year.
He said to operate the scanner, training would be given to the staff who had been requisitioned from the Department of Radiology in the hospital. Mr. Valasraj claimed that the MRI scanner would be the best equipment in the southern states .The Siemens company had agreed to have a resident Engineer in Pondicherry and there would be upgradation of the hardware and software of the model at no additional cost for the period of annual maintenance contract.The full warranty period would enable the department to save Rs. 90 lakhs at an average cost of Rs 18 lakhs a year.
Mr.Valsaraj said with the installation of the scanner vital organs could be scanned. D. Thamma Rao, Director of Medical Services and G. S. Reddy, Medical Superintendent of the hospital spoke of the advantages of the MRI scanner. They said the MRI would provide earliest and most reliable indication of stroke using the diffusion weighted imaging technique. Early detection of stroke cannot be done by CT scan, the officials said.
The CT scanner would continue to be used as it formed part of the whole network of the diagnostic approaches.
