Dress rehearsal for R-Day parade

New Delhi, Jan. 23. With marching contingents of the three Defence Services and the mechanised units absent from this year's Republic  Day parade, other contingents and  additional  tableaux tried  to  fill  the void as the full dress  rehearsal was held here today amid elaborate and intense security arrangements.

Held in the backdrop of terrorist threats to disrupt the celebrations which has forced for the first time curtailment of the parade route, the rehearsal went off smoothly amid enthusiasm and patriotic fervour.

The marching units of the Army, Air Force and Navy and mechanised units will be conspicuous by their absence from this year's parade owing to their deployment and commitments along the Indo-Pak border.

Marching contingents of para-military forces -- Assam Rifles, BSF, CRPF, ITBP and CISF, Railway Protection Force and Coast Guards -- were there to represent the armed forces as did the tableaux.

The mechanised formations were missed by thousands of spectators who had braved the morning chill to watch the final rehearsal before the final parade on Saturday. - PTI
