Annan drops India visit
By B. Muralidhar Reddy

ISLAMABAD, JAN. 23. The United Nations Secretary, Kofi Annan, who is currently on a visit to the region wanted to include India in his itinerary but had to drop the plan after New Delhi indicated that the dates are not suitable.

A spokesman of the U.N. told a news conference here that ``the Secretary-General had indicated a desire to visit India. However, the programme had to be dropped after New Delhi communicated that the proposed dates are not convenient''.

The spokesman was answering a specific question whether Mr. Annan could play a meaningful role in defusing the current tension between India and Pakistan without visiting New Delhi. After a two-day visit in Islamabad, Mr. Annan travels to Kabul and from there to Teheran.
