By Arvind Aaron
MOSCOW, JAN. 23 Ruslan Ponomariov made a draw in game seven against Vassily Ivanchuk after one hour and 15 minutes to become the youngest world chess champion in the 117-year history of the sport. He won the match by 4.5-2.5 and with a game to spare on Wednesday.
Ealier on Tuesday,Ivanchuk opened with the king pawn. Ponomariov went for the Petroff's defence, an opening he had played and relied heavily upon to get to this stage of the world championship.
Ivanchuk's new 13th move varied from the Anand vs. Adams game from Dortmund last year but soon black got equality and after the pawn sacrifice on move-19. Black's move-24 was inaccurate and it led to the simple drawn rook ending. Ivanchuk decided to make the most of this accurate move and proposed a draw on the 27th turn and it was accepted by `little Karpov'.
The game was over in a little over two-and-a-half hours.
Talking about the match so far, Ponomariov said, ``I was lucky''. Ivanchuk agreed with that. About this game, the players started to analyse at the press conference in native Ukrainian leaving the Russian press and the interpreters baffled.
