Calicut retains title
BANGALORE, JAN. 23. Calicut University retained its men's title in the South Zone inter-university badminton tournament with narrow 3-2 victory over Bangalore University at the Karnataka State Badminton Association courts here on Wednesday. The fixture was level at two matches all when the doubles pair of Vaisakh and Anup Vasu sealed the issue for Calicut with an easy win over Diganth and Saqib.
Bangalore started with a bang with Anup Sridhar blanking Paul Rajan not allowing the Calicut player to pick up a single point. However Sajith slammed Mohan Dev dropping only two points in the third game. The doubles fixtures were shared by Calicut and Bangalore to make the finish dependent on the final match.
Nagarajuna University also retained the title ensuring that Bangalore played runner-up in the women's section too defeating the latter 2-1. After Pooja Patil defeated Srilaxmi in a thrilling five game fixture, Nagarjuna's doubles pair of Radhika Reddy and Srilaxmi got the better of Pooja Patil and Chandana and later Radhika brooked no challenge from Chandana.
The top four teams in the men's and women's section will represent South Zone in the All-India university badminton tournament.

Men's Final: Calicut bt Bangalore 3-2 (Paul Rajan lost to Anup Sridhar 0-7, 0-7, 0-7; P. V. Sajith bt Mohan Dev 7-0, 7-0, 7-2; Sajith & Chiloop lost to Anup & Mohan Dev 1-7, 8-6, 2-7, 6-8; Saurav Sabu bt Saqib Ilyas 4-7, 7-2, 7-4, 7-5; Vaisakh & Anup Vasu bt Diganth & Ilyas 7-5, 7-5, 3-7, 7-1).
Semifinals: Nagarjuna bt Mangalore 2-0; Bangalore bt Madras 2-0; Third place matches: Madras bt Mangalore 2-1.
Women's finals: Nagarjuna bt Bangalore 2-1 (Srilaxmi lost to Pooja Patil 4-7, 7-1, 7-2, 5-7, 1-7; Radhika Reddy & Srilaxmi bt Pooja Patil & Chandana Rajendra 7-1, 7-1, 5- 7, 8-6; Radhika Reddy bt Chandana Rajendra 8-6, 7-0, 7-0).
Semifinals: Nagarjuna bt Mangalore 2-0; Bangalore bt Madras 2-0; Third place matches: Madras bt Mangalore 2-1.
Osman scalps six
HYDERABAD, JAN.23. Fine bowling by Mohd Osman (six for 16) helped AG Andhra Pradesh record a comfortable 99-run win over AG Kerala and move into the final of the IA & AD South Zone cricket tournament which began here today. Earlier, Ms. Lakshmi Parthasarathy, vice-chairperson, HUDA, inaugurated while, Mr. Surinder Pal, Principal Accountant General of AP, Mr. Srinivas Kumar and AG, Ms Surdarshana Talapatri, AG, also graced the function.
