Committee to decide on felling `killer' trees

HASSAN, JAN. 24. The Road Safety Committee and Regional Transport Authority (RTA) at its meeting here on Thursday decided to form a committee to identify and fell ''killer avenue trees''. The committee will include the Deputy Commissioner, the Superintendent of Police, the Deputy Conservator of Forest, and the Regional Transport Officer.
The decision was taken in view of increasing number of accidents at certain points along the Bangalore-Mangalore National Highway 48 between Shantigrama and Channarayapatna.
The Deputy Commissioner and Chairman of the RTA, B.P.Kaniram, said the committee would inspect and mark such trees, and would seek the permission of the Forest Department to fell them.
The RTO, Mohammed Dastgir, suggested that the committee also request the National Highway Authority to suitably alter and modify the road design at such points.
The Superintendent of Police, M.A. Saleem, said six fatal and identical accidents were reported at Karekere gate along National Highway 48 last year with the vehicles hitting a particular tree located along a curve.
He said the felling of these trees would reduce such accidents. The Deputy Conservator of Forest, C.K. Shivanna, agreed to identify and cut such trees.
The Road Safety Committee also decided to fell avenue trees on the right side of the highway along Hamul Dairy Circle upto the KSRTC bus depot.
In view of traffic bottleneck created by the current location of the depot gate, Mr. Kaniram directed the KSRTC Divisional Controller, Veere Gowda, to shift the gate.
He also directed the Commissioner of the Hassan City Municipal Council, B.A. Paramesh, to clear debris from construction sites across the city by levying actual cost from building owners.
It was decided to inform the presidents of gram panchayats to ask farmers to stop drying their harvested paddy on the road in view of likelihood of accidents.
The Executive Engineer of the Public Works Department, Chandrashekaraiah, agreed to affix warning signs at unmanned railway crossings in the district.
Mr. Saleem put forth a few proposals aimed at regulating traffic in the city, including alternate-day parking along Shanker Math Road and Hosline Road.
