TBGRI officials suspended
By Our Special Correspondent
THIRUVANANTHAPURAM, JAN. 24. Two top officials of the Tropical Botanical Garden Research Institute (TBGRI) have been placed under suspension on a series of charges involving irregularities in financial transactions and administrative matters.
The suspended officials are the registrar, KMA Rehman, and the Accounts Officer, Ravi Abraham. The decision to suspend them was taken by the Executive Committee of TBGRI at its meeting on Wednesday.
The suspension order issued today by the director of the institution says that the Finance Inspection Wing of the State Government had found prima facie evidence of these irregularities during the audit enquiry conducted by it. The Accountant General had earlier reported that an amount of Rs. 135 lakhs had been diverted up to March 31, 1999. In the case of the Biotechnology Centre at Puthenthoppe alone, a sum of Rs. 46 lakhs out of Rs. 50 lakhs sanctioned had been diverted.
Misappropriation of funds by passing bogus vouchers, granting of undue benefits to project staff, irregular sanctioning of higher scales of pay to staff by way of assessment promotion and misuse of official vehicles are some of the other charges against Rehman and Abraham.
