CM flayed for blaming parties for riots
By Our Staff Reporter
KOZHIKODE, JAN. 24. The People's Democratic Party (PDP) today criticised the Chief Minister, A.K. Antony, for putting the blame on political parties for the communal riots in the State.
At a press conference here today, the PDP's spokesperson, C.K. Abdul Aziz, alleged that the State police were no more a force to be taken for granted, as communal elements within the department also contributed to the escalating communal disharmony. There should be a system whereby activities of police personnel were also monitored, he said.
If it was an exaggerated version by police authorities about intensified activities by fascist forces that motivated the former Prime Minister, the late Indira Gandhi, to declare emergency in the country, Mr. Antony was committing a similar mistake in the State by relying too much on the police reports, the PDP leader said.
He said that it was on the basis of such reports, prepared in haste in order to satisfy the urgency, that police were chasing PDP workers. But, the PDP was prepared to produce its supporters, who were implicated in such cases, before the court. Admitting that the PDP lacked enough support as to lead a mass agitation, he said the PDP workers would be forced to occupy prison cells if the police did not stop haunting them.
The Chief Minister was also acting against the economic interest of the State by describing the State as a communally-sensitive and riot-prone area. No entrepreneur would dare to invest in the State which is declared a disturbed area by its own Chief Minister, Mr. Aziz pointed out.
