Line of Control

Sir, — In recent times, many commentators have been highlighting the Line of Control as the key to the resolution of our problems with Pakistan. This idea is not novel and has been considered everytime the India-Pakistan relationship flounders, only to be forgotten after the situation becomes normal.

A point worth noting is that the LoC has been in existence for about 30 years, and its precursor, the Ceasefire Line, for as long as the Kashmir issue itself.

Are the troublemakers in Kashmir oblivious to this fact, and will they renounce violence and help restore peace the moment the LoC is acknowledged as the international border?

The causes of the problems in Kashmir are too varied and complex to be solved by drawing or re-drawing lines across that State.

Sudharsan Jai Krishnan,
Alappuzha, Kerala
