Opinion - Letters to the Editor

The Kashmir issue

Sir, — This refers to the balanced views expressed by Kuldip Nayar in `Ensure free and fair polls' (Jan. 17) regarding the delusion that we can return to the status quo in Jammu and Kashmir once the forces on the border are withdrawn. The plight of Kashmiris is an important factor in defusing the crisis and to win back the State is a tough task. A continuous, meaningful dialogue between New Delhi and the Hurriyat Conference and other organisations is inevitable to convince them that a free and fair election will be held and persuade them to participate in the electoral process.

V.K. Sathyavan Nair,
Kottayam, Kerala

Sir, — It is obvious that Pakistan blinked. The Army Chief, S. Padmanabhan's strategy of overwhelming the enemy by deploying troops from the eastern sector to the western has made Pakistan come to its senses and realise the futility of war with India. Having said that, it is sad that this strategy was not used during the Kargil conflict. Pakistan would have asked its `freedom fighters' to withdraw and a number of Indian soldiers would have been saved.

Jairam,
Toronto, Canada
