`Jallikattu'

Sir, — Pongal heralds the advent of prosperous days. The worship of the sun god is the most significant part of the festival and it ends with the worship of the sacred cow and bull. This is followed the next day by `jallikattu' in some parts of Tamil Nadu. The act of biting the tail of the bull and letting it run amok among spectators is nothing short of barbarism. Is it necessary to include this sport as part of the celebrations?

H. Narayanan,
Bangalore
