Holidays galore

Sir, — Ours is perhaps the only country to have so many holidays. Apart from working five days a week and enjoying national and festival holidays, Central and State Government employees are granted casual, sick and privilege leave. A five-day week was introduced so that it would save fuel and electricity, but it has only nurtured laziness. We have a false notion that leaders are honoured by granting holidays on their birthdays. In Russia, people respect these eventful days by observing a one-minute silence. The Centre and State Governments should reduce the number of holidays.

Employees may be allowed to avail themselves of holidays during festivals pertaining to their religion. Bandhs and strikes should be banned. What the nation needs is hard work and higher production.

B. Srinivasan,
Chennai
