Private sector should adopt social policies: President
By Our Special Correspondent
NEW DELHI, JAN 25. The President, K. R. Narayanan, today called for a new thrust to resolve socio-economic issues to ensure that the great democracy of one billion people remained relevant and tuned to the problems of the masses.
One suggestion was that the private sector should adopt ``social policies'' and think in terms of providing representation in jobs to the deprived classes through a kind of affirmative action that would help create a more egalitarian society. The aim would be to ``uplift'' the ``deprived classes'' from their ``state of deprivation and inequality'' to give them the ``rights of citizens and civilised human beings.''
In his address to the nation on the eve of Republic Day, Mr. Narayanan dwelt at length on issues of education, women's empowerment and the need to remove injustices and discrimination inflicted on the Dalits and the tribals. Only if these ``crying socio-economic issues'' were resolved, democracy, the greatest achievement of India since Independence, which had given the country a stable system of governance, would thrive and remain relevant.
