Padma Vibhushan for Rangarajan, Soli Sorabjee

NEW DELHI, JAN. 25. The Andhra Pradesh Governor and noted economist, C. Rangarajan, the Attorney-General, Soli Sorabjee, the Hindustani vocalists, Gangubai Hangal and Kishori Amonkar, and the tabla maestro, Kishan Maharaj, have been chosen for this year's Padma Vibhushan awards, the country's second-highest civilian honour. No one has been chosen for Bharat Ratna, the top civilian award.
Padma Bhushan, the next highest honour, has gone to 27 persons, including Frank Pallone and Gary Ackerman, members of the India Caucus in the United States Congress, and Guri Ivanovich Marchuk and Yevgeni Petrovich Chelyshev of Russia. The former is an eminent scientist and the latter an educationist.
The other Padma Bhushan winners are the cricketer, Chandrakant Borde, the theatre personality, Habib Tanvir, the film producer, Ismail Merchant, the lawyer, K.K. Venugopal, the musician, K.J. Yesudas, the industrialists, Keshub Mahindra and H.H. Larsen, the medical expert, N. Rangabhashyam, the educationists, V.C. Kulandaiswamy and Nirmala Verma, the tabla exponent, Zakir Hussain, the classical dancer, Sitara Devi, the vocalists, Shobha Gurtu and Prabha Atre, the cartoonist, Mario Joao Carlos Do Rosario De Brito Miranda (for journalism) and the banker, P.C.V. Gandhi.
This year, Padma Shri is being conferred on 66 persons, including the cricketer, Diana Fram Edulji, the filmmakers, Govind Nihalani and Mani Ratnam, the comedienne, Manorama, the ace shooter, Jaspal Rana, the musicians, Mani Krishnaswami, T.H. Vinayak Ram, Lateef Khan and Vishwa Mohan Bhatt, the musicologist, N.P. Seshadri, the lawyer, Viresh Pratap Chaudhry, the dancer, Saroja Vaidyanathan, the social worker, Prakash Amte, the medical experts, Prakash Kothari, A.S. Narayana, D. Nageswara Reddy, G. Nageswara Rao, Harsh Mahajan, Suresh H. Advani, K.S. Paul of the United States, Mathangi Ramakrishnan, P.K. Sethi, P.K. Chowbey, V.K. Dada and Vikram Marwah and the scientists, D. Balasubramanian, Amitav Mallik, A. Sivathanu Pillai, Ashok Jhunjhunwala, B.N. Suresh, C. Ganguly, H.S. Kamath, I.V. Subba Rao, Kota Harinarayana, P. Balaram, A.S. Arya, Ramnath Cowsik, V.K. Sharma and N.Balakrishnan.
