Arjan Singh assumes rank

NEW DELHI, JAN. 26. Air Chief Marshal Arjan Singh, who nurtured a fledgling Indian Air Force into one of the best fighting arms in the world, today assumed the rank of the first Marshal of the Indian Air Force for life.

The title is equivalent to the Field Marshal in the Army, carrying five stars. The first Air Chief Marshal of the IAF, the 83-year-old Arjan Singh has been recognised for his most valuable services to the air force and the nation.

Winner of the British Distinguished Flying Cross, Marshal Arjan Singh was the chief of air staff for a period of four years and eleven months from 1964 to 1969. Previous chiefs of the IAF held the rank of Air Marshal. _ UNI
