Kidambi gets the better of Preetham Sharma
By Raghunandan Gokhale
PANAJI, JAN. 26. International Master Sunderrajan Kidambi (8), playing as a special entry for the AICF, raised his game at the right moment and beat overnight leader R. Preetham Sharma (7.5) of Tamil Nadu in the 10th and penultimate round of the 31st National junior chess championship, organised by the Goa Chess Association, here today.
Kidambi shares the lead with S. Satyapragyan (Indian Airlines) and former National sub-junior champion Deepan Chakravarthy (Emanuel Chess Club).
Kidambi and Satyapragyan scored over their opponents in contrasting styles. Satyapragyan slowly outplayed Preetham in Dutch Defence, while Satya, true to his style, went for Vikramjit Singh's King in Sicilian Dragon defence.
Prathamesh Mokal (Maharashtra) must blame himself for his loss due to time trouble. He missed a winning move and fell into a lost ending against Deepan in Sicilian Kan defence.
Himanshu Sharma was outplayed by A.M. Rajkumar (Manipur) in Keres attack. Incidently, the Manipur boy reached the hall late by half an hour because of a road blockade for VIPs.
