Opinion - Letters to the Editor

Mass terrorism

Sir, — Apropos the Editorial `Yet another yatra' (Jan. 23) permit me to say that the BJP in power, both at the Centre and in Uttar Pradesh, should not be a passive spectator. The first `yatra' led by L.K. Advani in 1992 saw the demolition of the Babri masjid and the resultant serial bomb blasts and violence. Once again, the present `yatra' to New Delhi will create communal clashes and suffering to the minorities. Terrorism in any form should be dealt with firmly. When it is organised by a few people, it is banned. But when it is supported by a mass, it is not even prevented, not to speak of a ban.

Religious fanatics do great harm. The minorities are not aliens. They are as native and patriotic as the majority. The `sants' should help find means for the salvation of mankind as a whole and not indulge in terrorising a portion of it in the name of God.

R. Arputham,

Lalgudi, T.N.
