The Ayodhya issue
Sir, The VHP has launched the `Sant Chetavani Yatra' as a final warning to the Centre on its decision to start temple construction in Ayodhya in March. The security there has been relaxed at this critical juncture. The attitude of the BJP-led Government over the developments is in contrast to the assurance of the Union Home Minister, L.K. Advani, that the Centre will abide by the court verdict.
The guidelines issued by the Supreme Court in its judgment pronounced in October 1994 does not give room for manoeuvre because the Centre as a `statutory receiver' has to maintain the `status quo' of the disputed area till its handing over in terms of the adjudication made in the suits for implementation of the final decision whereas the model of the temple envisages construction over the disputed area as well when the issue is still sub judice. Hence the Centre is duty-bound to ensure that the issue is not allowed to precipitate.
