All-time great?
Sir, C. Rammanohar Reddy in his article `Is Sachin an all-time great?' (Sunday Magazine, Jan. 20) has sought to belittle Sachin Tendulkar's greatness as a batsman by applying the yardstick that he has not enabled India win more tests. He has woefully failed to consider other factors which contribute to the team's success. The feat of a Steve Waugh or Gary Sobers alone has not accounted for their teams' success. If it were not for the performance of their bowlers, the contribution of the supporting batsmen and the high calibre fielding, Steve Waugh, Gary Sobers and their ilk would not have won Tests.

Sir, I refer to the article on Sachin Tendulkar. A truly great batsman must be able to transform the fortunes of his team and, judging by this vital yardstick, Tendulkar's achievements pale in comparison with that of Gary Sobers, Viv Richards, Greg Chappell and Steve Waugh. Last year, Wisden rated Brian Lara's unbeaten 154 in the Barbados Test of the 1999 series against Australia as the best innings ever played after Don Bradman. It is a fact that none of Tendulkar's masterly efforts could be ranked along with this incredible performance of Lara who, on that occasion, brought off an impossible victory for the side single-handedly against the supreme might of McGrath, Gillespie and Warne.
