MUMBAI, JAN. 27. Senior Congress leader and former Human Resources Development Minister, Arjun Singh, today said that the Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) ``is playing with fire'' by raking up the issue of construction of Ram temple at Ayodhya.

``The VHP is playing with fire. The Prime Minister, Atal Behari Vajpayee, must not change his earlier stand on the issue,'' Mr. Singh, a Congress Working Committee (CWC) member, told a news conference here.

``I see it as an unfortunate development,'' he said referring to the decision of the Kendriya Margadarshak Mandal, the highest decision-making body of the VHP to endorse the move of the Ram Mandir Nirmal Samiti to start construction of the temple immediately after March 12.

``Let us see what happens in the next few days,'' said Mr. Singh, who is also the chief of the Minority Cell of the party.

``The country is passing through a crucial phase and the Congress has supported the Government in fighting terrorism and its diplomatic offensive against Pakistan.''
