Railways earns date with TN

NEW DELHI, JAN. 27. Yere Goud made an unbeaten 101 (162b, 15x4) as Railways scored 314 for four in its second innings against Delhi in the Ranji Trophy pre-quarterfinal, which ended in a draw at the Karnail Singh Stadium here on Sunday. Railways, which progressed on the basis of its first innings lead, will play Tamil Nadu in the quarterfinals.

Resuming at 27 for one, Railways frustrated Delhi on a pitch which hardly gave any assistance to the bowlers even on the final day. Apart from Goud, opener J. P. Yadav (80) and Tejinder Pal Singh (64), who scored his second half-century of the match, had a good stint.

Superb spell by Sabir

At Jaipur, Bengal mediumpacer Sabir Ali's deadly spell of six for 48 sent Rajasthan crashing to defeat by an innings and 51 runs. The host added just 24 to its overnight total of 122 for three while losing the last seven wickets.

Gujarat in last eight

Gujarat booked a berth in the quarterfinals by virtue of its 43-run lead against Andhra at Ahmedabad. R.V.Ch. Prasad and H. Watekar fell cheaply in the morning as the visitor was dismissed for 456 chasing Gujarat's 499.

Orissa in driver's seat

At Cuttack, Orissa made 65 for one in its first innings after restricting Uttar Pradesh to 231 on the opening day of their pre-quarterfinal match at the Barabati stadium.

The scores:

At New Delhi: Railways 497 and 314 for four (Yere Goud 101 not out, J. P. Yadav 80, Tejinder Pal Singh 64) drew with Delhi 395. Railways advanced through first innings lead.

At Jaipur: Rajasthan 321 and 146 (Sabir Ali six for 48) lost to Bengal 518.

At Ahmedabad: Gujarat 499 and 175 for eight (Nilesh Modi 75 not out) drew with Andhra 456 (Md. Faiq 71, R.V.Ch. Prasad 150, Watekar 66, Kalpesh Patel six for 96, Shyamal Bhatt three for 126). Gujarat progressed on first innings lead.

At Cuttack: Uttar Pradesh 231 (Mohd. Saif 79, Nikhil Chopra 41, Debasis Mohanty four for 53, Sanjay Satpathy three for 43) vs Orissa 65 for one.

Ranji quarterfinals postponed

MUMBAI: The Ranji Trophy quarterfinals has been postponed by two days to enable the Test stars to take part in the second `knock-out' stage. The sixth and final one-dayer against England concludes with a day/night match in Mumbai on February 3. ``The Ranji Trophy quarterfinals will now start on February 5 so that players belonging to Tamil Nadu, Baroda, Bengal and Railways can represent their teams in the quarterfinals,'' said Mr. Niranjan Shah, Hony. Secretary, BCCI.
