Moment of truth
Sir, The BJP is in a dilemma whether or not to play the Ayodhya card in the Uttar Pradesh election, as the repercussions of any misadventure at this juncture, when the security forces are on high alert along the border, will go far beyond the poll scenario. India has taken a moral high ground vis-a-vis Pakistan, after December 13. It cannot afford to lose the support of many countries by staging a `misadventure' that will expose the country.
The BJP is at the crossroads. It is widely conjectured, if the current mood of the U.P. electorate is an indication, that the party cannot win a majority or even the largest number of seats, without any gimmick. Its performance during the last five years does not deserve any appreciation. If it tries a religious gimmick, by allowing the VHP and the Bajrang Dal to create a mass upheaval, it will be exposed as fundamentalist. It is, therefore, a moment of truth for Atal Behari Vajpayee and L.K. Advani. They should decide whether the party should continue its `demolition saga' to return to power in India's most crucial State or build an India on sound, secular and democratic lines.
Ghulam Muhammed,
