Belated honour

Sir, — I refer to the news report `Arjan Singh is IAF Marshal' (Jan. 26). Welcome as the news may be, one finds the timing a little strange. The best moments of the Marshal came in the 1965 war with Pakistan when an ill-equipped Indian Air Force had to take on the Saber jets of Pakistan. It is not clear what has happened now for the Government to bestow this belated honour on Arjan Singh after 35 years!

A similar honour should also be bestowed on J.N. Choudhury, who led the Army with distinction in the same war. His achievement was indeed praiseworthy, coming as it did only three years after the debacle in the Indo-China war.

Anjan Sen,

Chennai
