PM adopting double standards: V.P. Singh
By Our Special Correspondent
NEW DELHI, JAN 28. The former Prime Minister, V.P. Singh, today charged the Prime Minister, Atal Behari Vajpayee, with adopting double standards on the Ram temple issue.
He said that as leader of the Bharatiya Janata Party which was supporting his Government in 1989, Mr. Vajpayee withdrew support because he had taken the stand that the Ayodhya issue could be resolved only through mutually acceptable negotiations or through a judicial verdict. But now, as the Prime Minister, Mr. Vajpayee was taking the precise stand that he(Mr. Singh) had taken then. ``Mr. Vajpayee had disagreed when I firmly told the Vishwa Hindu Parishad leaders that the Ram temple issue can be resolved only through negotiations or a court verdict. He went to the President and withdrew support to my Government precisely for this. And now we are told that Mr. Vajpayee told the VHP what I had told them then,'' Mr. Singh said.
He said he clearly remembered seeing the document in which the VHP leaders had given a solemn undertaking to the former Home Minister, Buta Singh, to abide by a judicial verdict in the Ayodhya case.
