Jayalalithaa seeks dismissal of DMK plea
By J. Venkatesan

NEW DELHI, JAN. 28. The AIADMK general secretary, Jayalalithaa, today moved the Delhi High Court seeking dismissal of the writ petition filed by Vaigai Sekar, DMK candidate for the Andipatti byelection in Tamil Nadu, seeking a direction to the Election Commission to defer the bypoll till the 17,000 bogus votes in the electoral rolls were deleted.

Seeking to implead herself in the case, Ms. Jayalalithaa said the petition appeared to be an attempt by the DMK to come to the court in the last minute to prevent the Election Commission from holding the election.

On January 24, Justice Manmohan Sarin posted the writ petition of Mr. Sekar (who had not cited the other candidates as respondents) for further hearing on January 29 when counsel for the commission sought adjournment after the judge asked him to make submissions on the averments of the petitioner.

In his petition, Mr. Sekar had said that though the DMK had submitted several representations to the commission about the inclusion of 17,000 bogus votes in the Andipatti constituency, there was no response from it.
