THANJAVUR JAN. 28. Music is the greatest unifying factor in the world, the Kerala Finance Minister, K. Sankaranarayanan, said here today.
Inaugurating the 155th aradhana festival of Sri Thyagaraja, the saint composer, on the banks of Cauvery at Thiruvaiyaru, he said the world was now in need of communal harmony. Sri Thyagaraja's kritis contained it. His compositions comprised 200 ragas and all musicians confined themselves to them.
The Minister paid rich tributes to late G.K.Moopanar, who was president of the Thyagabrahma Mahotsava Sabha for 35 years.
The Tamil Maanila Congress president and trustee of the Sabha, G.K. Vasan, said it was because of the blessings of Sri Thyagaraja that his father could be the Sabha president for such a long time.
Now the responsibility had been transferred to his family members by devotees and music lovers.
The Thanjavur District Collector, S. Kosalaraman, president of the Thyagabrahma Mahotsava Sabha, G. Rangaswamy Moopanar, secretaries of the Sabha, Kunnakudi Vaidyanathan and Haridwaramangalam A.K.Palanivel, also spoke.
