Hopeful of catching Veerappan: police
By Our Tamil Nadu Bureau
CHENNAI, JAN. 29. The Director-General of the Tamil Nadu Police, B.P. Nailwal, is hopeful of apprehending the elusive forest brigand Veerappan soon.
When contacted, Mr. Nailwal told The Hindu that the search operations in the Sathyamangalam forest area had been intensified and several smaller police parties were combing the jungle.
According to information reaching here, there had been a steady flow of intelligence in recent weeks on the movements of Veerappan and his close associates. The Special Task Force (STF) and the Tamil Nadu police have therefore intensified their operations in the jungles.
Police are adopting a ``befriend-the-tribals'' approach to get more information on the movements of Veerappan. This, in fact, had helped them in the past in nabbing the brigand's associates. However, police are also aware of the fact that people would not be forthcoming in giving information on Veerappan for fear of dire consequences.
Police sources here said the City Police Commissioner, K. Vijay Kumar, who earlier led the STF with Walter Dawaram, had also been deputed to the forest area to help finalise the strategy. ``We have now more information than before and are hopeful of getting him. But we cannot set a time-frame as yet'', a senior officer said tonight.
