Opinion - Letters to the Editor

Rein in the zealots

Sir, — If Pakistan's President, Pervez Musharraf, could find the resources and strength to grapple with Muslim extremists on his side, why can't our Prime Minister, Atal Behari Vajpayee, remind the Hindu zealots that in a democracy the rule of law is above all.

Instead, on being bullied by the Sants after the Chetavani yatra, he set the ball rolling in what could be his most florid act of pusillanimity to date.

The Prime Minister is a statesman with unmatched rhetorical powers on the contemporary scene. One fears for what lies ahead.

Mushtaqh Ali,

Chennai
