Federer advances

MILAN, FEB. 1. Defending champion Roger Federer struggled into the quarterfinals of the Milan indoor ATP tournament on Thursday, after a narrow win 6-3, 6-7, 7-5 over Russian Nikolay Davydenko.

The results: Roger Federer bt Nikolay Davydenko 6-3, 6- 7, 7-5; Younes El Aynaoui bt Stefano Galvani 6-4, 6-3; Sjeng Schalken bt Andre Sa 6-3, 6-0; Max Mirnyi bt Michal Tabara 6-1, 6-2; Sargis Sargsian bt Michel Kratochvil 6-4, 6-4.
