Giles' distinction
By Mohandas Menon

** Thursday's match (India vs England) was the 1800th LOI match to be played since January 1971.

** Ashley Giles (5-57), in his 11th match, became the ninth England bowler to take a five-wicket haul in LOIs. Vic Marks, Darren Gough and Mark Ealham have done it twice. He also became the second England bowler to take five wickets against India after pace bowler Paul Jarvis who had claimed 5-35 in Bangalore on 26-2-1993.

** Giles' figures are the best by an English left-arm spinner, bettering the 4-22 by Phil Tufnell against NZ at Christchurch on 20-2-1997. This was also the best show by a left- armer against India, surpassing the 4-18 by Sanath Jayasuriya at the SSC, Colombo, on 1-7-1998.

** Off-spinner Sarandeep Singh became the 143rd player to represent India in LOIs.

** Darren Gough appeared in his 100th LOI match. He became the eighth Englishman and 116th player to do so.

** Nasser Hussain's wicket was Sachin Tendulkar's 50th on Indian soil. He also became the first batsman to aggregate 4000 runs at home. Tendulkar now has 4003 runs in 95 matches.

** Playing in his 70th match, Nick Knight recorded his fourth hundred of his career while Sourav Ganguly scored his maiden 50 against England in his ninth match against that team.

** The 111-run stand between Ganguly and Mohd. Kaif was the best for the fourth wicket at Kotla, erasing the 110 by Ashok Malhotra and Sandeep Patil against Sri Lanka on 15-9-1982.

** This was the second time England won by two runs, the first being against the West Indies in Sydney on 28-11-1979.
