All about Wankhede Stadium

MUMBAI, FEB. 2. From 1948 to 1973, the Brabourne Stadium, the home ground of the Cricket Club of India had hosted 17 Tests. However, in 1972, the Mumbai (then Bombay) Cricket Association decided to build its own stadium on a plot of land leased to it by the Government of Maharashtra. The first International match to be played at the Wankhede Stadium was the fifth and final Test between India and West Indies on from January 23 to 29, 1975. In all 18 Test matches have been played at this venue.
The first LOI match was played on 17-1-1987 between India and Sri Lanka. In all 11 LOIs have been hosted at this venue. During the 1996 World Cup flood-lights were installed for the first time at this venue. Three World Cup matches have been hosted here.
The home team has so far played 10 matches at this venue, won six and lost four. England won the only match it played at this venue, the 1987 World Cup semifinal against India by 35 runs.
