Opinion - Letters to the Editor

Negative attitude

Sir, — This has reference of Mohsin Meer's letter, `The Kashmir issue' (Jan. 25). Mr. Meer is ignorant of facts pertaining to the Kashmir issue. There was no `popular rebellion' by the subjects of Maharajah Hari Singh of Jammu and Kashmir for the unification of the State with Pakistan. The Maharajah sensed trouble and concluded the stand still agreement with Pakistan in 1947 and dreamt of establishing an independent Kashmir. Maharajah Hari Singh understood the gravity of the situation, when Pakistan invaded Kashmir, and signed the Instrument of Accession with India with the consent of his subjects and their leader, Sheikh Abdullah.

The people of Jammu and Kashmir are now enjoying the `the right of self-determination' under the Constitution. Pakistan's attitude is negative. Therefore, pamphlets giving the correct picture of the historical background of the Kashmir issue should be supplied to Pakistanis to enable them to understand the truth.

Mr. Meer's view that Hyderabad-Deccan signed the accession papers to join Pakistan is wrong. The Nizam of Hyderabad signed the stand still agreement with India when the majority of his subjects had made up their minds to join India. The Nawab of Junagadh signed papers with Pakistan without his subjects' consent. He failed to pacify his subjects and fled to Pakistan with his sovereignty in his pocket. The Diwan of Junagadh requested India to maintain law and order in Junagadh. Indian forces entered Junagadh to maintain law and order, and merged the State with India after the conduct of a genuine plebiscite.

Mian M. Sayyad,

Hyderabad
