India-China ties

Sir, — Indian industry should welcome to the recent visit of the Chinese Prime Minister, Zhu Rongji. The two countries have huge market opportunities to create an exclusive economic zone _ CIFTA (China India Free Trade Area). The SAARC and its sibling, SAFTA, that has been in vogue for over 16 years have been non-starters for historical reasons.

CIFTA, with possible member countries like Sri Lanka, Myanmar, Nepal and Bhutan, should be pursued to benefit this region. Now it is the right time to cement the economic ties by creating CIFTA.

H.N. Ramakrishna,

Bangalore
