Opinion - Letters to the Editor

Burden on women

Sir, — While paying tribute to Anil Agarwal (`Redefining the Environment', Jan. 13), Kalpana Sharma has drawn attention to the burden that women in India have to carry (literally). She has forcefully brought out the pioneering efforts of Agarwal to create and sustain awareness of this perennial problem. She has also highlighted his endeavour to alleviate this sad situation.

In this context, one is reminded of a quote from The Quaker Movement — 1989 echoed in One World for One Earth: Saving the Environment, by Philip Sarre and Paul Smith with Eleanor Morris _ Earthscan and Open University: `Modern technology has made it possible to deliver a bomb across the world in minutes, but women in rural areas of Asia and Africa still walk several hours a day for the family's water supply.'

What a shame for society and technology in our vaunted civilisation!

G. Radhakrishnan,

Thiruvananthapuram
