Seeds tumble out
KOLKATA, FEB. 3. The qualifiers produced a glut of upsets in the Bharat Petroleum ITF junior tennis, the main draw of which starts here at the Dakshin Kalikata Sansad courts on Monday. The qualifiers, which decide four slots in the main draw in both girls' and boys' sections, saw a good contest in the girls' section with all the top four seeds crashing out in the final round.
The girls' final round, which had an all-Indian line- up, saw top seeded Asha Nandkumar and second seeded Devanshi Rajgarhia losing against unseeded opponents Swetha Devraj and Sarmistha Chaudhuri, respectively. Swatvika Kandaswamy and Karina Ahuja scalped third seeded Sanyukta Barua and fourth seeded Heena Valecha to complete the rout.
In the boys' section top seeded V.M. Ranjeet and third seeded Abhay Prakash won their final round matches to ensure main draw berths but second seeded Vikram Aditya Menon lost to eighth seeded Sabyasachi Bose in a tense three-setter. Israel's Lior Barbash beat Chinese opponent Luo Jie to complete the quota of qualifiers.
