Faiz, Suresh score centuries
JAMSHEDPUR, FEB. 3. Brilliant centuries by opener Faiz Fazal (105) and Suresh Raina (125 not out) helped Central Zone score 297 for three in its first innings on the opening day of the final of the inter-zonal Vijay Hazare Trophy (under-16) tournament against host East Zone here on Sunday.
Left-handed Fazal and Shivakant Shukla (23) started on a confident note fetching 50 runs in the opening stand after Central Zone elected to bat.
East Zone skipper Anirban Gupta's decision to introduce spinners in the pre-lunch session paid dividends when R.R. Rout struck the first blow claiming Shukla, caught by Bignesh Mohanty in the 18th over.
Md Amir (9), who scored a chanceless 112 in the previous match against North Zone, did not last long. He misjudged a Manoj Tiwari delivery and stepped out to play only to see the bails dislodged by stumper H. Das.
Left-handed Suresh Raina joined Fazal and they steadied the Central innings by scoring 138 runs in 152 minutes facing 248 deliveries.
The two batsmen flayed East Zone bowlers and kept scoring at will. Central Zone went to lunch at 102 for two. Fazal appeared more aggressive of the two completing his century with 15 boundaries.
At tea Central was 210 for two. Fazal became the first victim in the post-tea session when an accurate throw by Soumik Mukherjee from the cover region found him short of the crease. Fazal's 105 came in 281 minutes off 240 balls.
After Fazal's departure, the in-form Raina opened up against the East Zone tweakers and executed some beautiful drives. Raina, who was on 57 at tea, completed his fourth century of the season in company of skipper Ravikant Shukla.
At stumps, Raina was batting on 125 which included 16 hits to fence while Ravikant was on 16.
Brief score: central Zone: 297 for three (Faiz Fazal 105, Suresh Raina (batting) 125).
