Joe Smith adjudged best

NEW DELHI, FEB. 4. India swept eight of the ten gold medals at stake, but England's light middleweight pugilist, Joe Smith was adjudged the `best boxer' in the YMCA international junior championship at the YMCA Complex here on Monday.

Six gold medals had been assured at the beginning of the day itself for the host, as it had both the finalists in as many weight categories.

Vikram Dhull defeated Englishman Kaylem Lowe 12-10 to clinch the welterweight gold and Harpal Singh Sandhu bagged the middleweight gold when the referee stopped his bout against Chin Yu Tsao of Chinese Taipei.

Joe Smith scored a 23-9 victory over Parvinder Singh in the light middleweight category, in a rousing contest in which the Indian perhaps lacked the right technique to match his ferocity. The Englishmen were peeved that their national anthem was not available for the medal ceremony when Thomas Coward won the light welterweight gold. However, the audio tape was found in time to be played during the medal presentation for Joe Smith.

The results (finals): Light flyweight: Khimanand Belwal (Ind-Y) bt Arun Singh (Ind-G) 14-10; Flyweight: Robin Dev (Ind-Y) bt V. Durga Rao (Ind-G) 16-4; Bantamweight: Diwakar Prasad (Ind- Y) bt Bijender Singh (Ind-G) 23-13; Featherweight: Jai Bhagwan Singh (Ind-Y) bt M. Ahteshamuddin (Ind-G) 14-2; Lightweight: Vijender Singh (Ind-Y) bt Gautam Bhargav (Ind-G); Light welterweight: Thomas Coward (Eng) bt Steven Brabant (Mri) 19-10; Welterweight: Vikram Dhull (Ind-Y) bt Kaylem Lowe (Eng); Light middleweight: Joe Smith (Eng) bt Parvinder Singh (Ind-Y) 23-9; Middleweight: Harpal Singh Sandhu (Ind-Y) bt Chin Yu Tsao (Tpe) RSC 1st round; Light heavyweight: Vinod Sumra (Ind-Y) bt Joginder Singh (Ind-G) 17-10.
